Roy first sang calypso at Point Fortin
College in 1979. The following year, 1980, he won the school
competition and went on to win similar competitions at the
University of the West Indies, St. Augustine in 1988 and 1989. This
is his first major recording. Three of the five songs on the CD,
however, were originally written in 1989: Nello - Tribute to CLR
James, which was written after his death in May 1989, Tribute
to Superblue, which was written to commemorate Super's 10th year
in calypso and Tell Dem Drivers. The latter song is sung by
Jennel Joseph, who won the SANFEST calypso competition in 2001.
Jennel is also the daughter of the musical arranger, Junior Joseph. |
